What you’ll learn
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to organize an AutoCAD drawing with layers, control object properties, and keep your plans easy to read.
- Create and name layers
- Assign colors and linetypes
- Use layers to manage drawing visibility
Step 1: Open Layer Properties
In AutoCAD, enter LA at the command line and press Enter. The Layer Properties Manager opens.
Add your own AutoCAD screenshot below this paragraph using an Image block.
Step 2: Create a new layer
Click New Layer, enter a descriptive name such as A-WALL, and choose the appropriate color and linetype.
DDS Tip: Use a consistent naming convention across projects. It makes filtering, plotting, and troubleshooting much faster.
Step 3: Assign objects to layers
Select an object and choose the target layer from the Layers panel. Set its color and linetype to ByLayer when appropriate.
Try it yourself
Create three layers named A-WALL, A-DOOR, and A-TEXT. Draw a few objects on each, then toggle layer visibility to see how the drawing changes.
